Streetsport
The programme aims to address a range of societal issues and support marginalised groups through sport, physical activity and creative endeavour.
Actively promoting health and wellbeing, Streetsport helps to eliminate barriers for 鈥榟ard to reach鈥� youths by widening access and uniting people through fostering a sense of social value, belonging and responsibility within their own communities.
The collaborative partnership model brings together multiple stakeholders (including , and the and volunteers resulting in activities that react and respond to local community needs and issues. Streetsport's impact is demonstrated by our ability to reduce levels of antisocial behaviour and crime; improve prospects for employability through skills development pathways and widen levels of inclusion and participation for disadvantaged young people. The programme currently exceeds 20,000 active participations annually in a variety of locations throughout Aberdeen City.
The project has also enabled a number of students to participate in associated activities and offers an annual work placement opportunity for Communication Design students.
I applied for a work placement with the Denis Law Legacy Trust and was delighted to be selected. I enjoyed my time working and collaborating with the team and was afforded the opportunity to take on a range of projects and work to deadlines. I developed my communication and teamworking abilities and in particular my videography skills within projects that had a tangible impact within communities.
Aims and Objectives
Streetsport has 10 aims and objectives and has been recognised both locally and nationally with a number of nominations and awards.
- To provide community-based events and activities that are free of charge and accessible to all.
- To promote participation, social inclusion & integration.
- To motivate and empower young people through prevention, intervention & diversionary activities.
- To promote respect, civic values and social responsibility within communities and help reduce instances of youth crime and anti-social behaviour.
- To promote health and well-being and discourage the misuse of substances, drugs and alcohol.
- To promote education and creativity and the development of self-confidence, initiative and interpersonal skills.
- To support & reconnect disaffected young people by providing alternative activities and opportunities for achievement.
- To provide a platform for positive transformation.
- To provide volunteers with opportunities to engage with and pursue personal development activities and qualifications.
- To work in partnership and collaborate with all parties who share our common objectives for the benefit of communities and young people.
