Consider BIM and its applications for the built environment. Explore BIM at the conceptual design stage; cross discipline design; shared BIM models; BIM during the construction stages; CDE, technical issues; virtual prototyping; BIM protocol; interoperability; building data storage and accessibility; smart data workflow: digital construction and transformation.

This course aims to provide an introduction to the application of BIM in practice.

BIM, as a core part of digitization, is at the foundation of change in our industry. It will deal with key documents which have emerged in recent years and consider how these have been referred to by industry and the Professional Bodies.

The subject of BIM application requires a learning curve that encompasses theory, legislation, and practice, and the course will deal with various stages of the design-construction management life cycle. By which, it develops a sustainable approach to asset creation and management. This can be essential for project decision-making hierarchy and implementation. Therefore, one can argue that the basic ethos behind BIM is centred on the understanding of shared data, shared responsibility, and collaborative working.

In developing your understanding of BIM and with your engagement and participation, you will be able to demonstrate your ability to:

  • Demonstrate a critical understanding of the utilisation of BIM during the architectural (multi discipline) design phase, from concept to detail design, including smart data workflow.
  • Apply BIM as a vehicle to manage activity during the construction phase, including proactive response to technical and contractual issues.
  • Critically appraise the value of BIM throughout the occupied life cycle of a building.
  • Evaluate the challenges inherent in providing building information models in a form which is interoperable, across disciplines.
